How to Wear a Ski Helmet with Long Hair

If you have long hair, wearing a ski helmet might seem a little more challenging. But if you wear your hair down or put it into a low ponytail, your helmet will fit just fine without any issues.

I’ve been skiing for nearly my entire life, and I always wear a helmet when I’m on the mountain. I also have long hair, so I know how to get a helmet to fit appropriately with this in mind.

This post will tell you how to wear a ski helmet with long hair. It’s not that difficult, but you want to keep a few things in mind to get an ideal fit. I’ll provide you with that information here, alongside a few other tips to keep you comfortable and ready for action.

Let’s get started.

The Importance of a Properly Fitting Helmet

Before we get into the details of wearing a ski helmet with long hair, it’s important to touch on why you want a properly fitting ski helmet.

If you don’t get a secure fit because of your hair or any other reason, the helmet can be too loose or tight. You don’t want either of these situations to happen because it can affect how the helmet performs and your overall skiing experience.

When a helmet doesn’t sit snuggly on the top of your head because it’s too loose, you risk having it slip and slide around as you ski. This can limit how much protection you get if you take a bad fall. It’s not a good thing.

If the helmet is too tight, it can be very uncomfortable, affecting your overall skiing experience. Discomfort can cause you to want to take the helmet off, which means you’ll either be less safe or will head into the lodge to take a break.

How to Wear a Ski Helmet With Long Hair

There are plenty of skiers who have long hair and wear ski helmets. It’s not much of an issue, so long as you know how to wear your hair to get a good fit and limit any discomfort. Here are some different ways you can wear a helmet with long hair.

1. Wear Your Hair Down

The easiest way to wear a ski helmet with long hair is to wear your hair down. Don’t worry about styling or hair ties. Just put your helmet on and get after it. Your hair might get messy, but you won’t have any issues with fit or comfort.

2. Wear a Low Ponytail

Another option is to wear a low ponytail. This is less messy than wearing your hair down and just as effective in achieving a good fit and comfort to last all day long. You’ll want to place your hair tie low around the top of your neck so it’s not in the way of your helmet.

3. Wear Braids

Braiding your hair is another equally effective option. You can either do a single braid down the back or two braids pigtail style on either side of your head. Using two braids is better because you don’t have as much hair underneath your helmet.

How Not to Wear a Ski Helmet With Long Hair

Now that you know the best ways to wear a ski helmet with long hair, I want to touch on how not to wear your hair quickly.

Don’t bun your hair. If you bunch up your hair at all underneath the helmet, you aren’t going to get a good fit, and you’ll have issues with comfort. If you have long enough hair, you probably won’t even be able to put your helmet on if you wear it in a bun.

The best way to wear a ski helmet with long hair is simply to wear your hair down, put it in a low ponytail, or braid it in pigtails. These will give you a solid fit and limit the chance of any discomfort while you ski.

Wearing a helmet is important, but so is having that helmet fit properly. If you follow the advice here, you’ll stay safe and comfortable while you’re on the slopes.
