Is Volkl a Good Ski Brand?

Volkl is a top ski brand, especially amongst experienced skiers who demand high-performance models that can live up to their standards. Volkl is well-known for making high-quality skis built to rip and ready for anything.

My name is Christine, and I’m a lifelong skier with an endless love for the snow. I’ve used many different types of skis over the years and have first-hand experience using several Volkl models. I know how these stack up compared to the competition.

This post will explore Volkl as a ski brand. I’ll explain why I think this is a solid ski brand and give you some insight into why you might want to explore using Volkl skis. My goal is to help you make a more informed purchasing decision.

Let’s dive in.

Key Takeaways

  • Volkl has a strong reputation with serious and experienced skiers for making skis that can handle demanding conditions. The brand consistently delivers outstanding performance reviews with many of its models.
  • Volkl skis are typically better suited to experienced skiers than beginners. The models it releases are performance-based and can often overwhelm skiers with less experience.
  • Volkl skis are also very durable and made of high-quality materials. This translates into reliable mountain performance and a good value that justifies paying a bit more for the skis.

Is Volkl a Good Ski Brand?

Volkl is a solid ski brand with an excellent reputation amongst experienced skiers. Some of the best skiers I know love to use Volkl skis, and they have been for years. The brand delivers time and time again when it comes to performance and dependability.

Most of the skis that Volkl makes are intended for intermediate and advanced skiers. They are aggressive and built to handle challenging conditions while being pushed to the limit. This is great news if you have the skills to take them there.

But this also means that Volkl skis are not a great option for beginners. The skis can be a little too aggressive and stiff, which poses challenges if you are just learning how to get around on the mountain.

Another reason Volkl is such a good ski brand is the quality of materials it uses to construct its skis. Every model I have used or heard about is built to last while delivering outstanding performance.

When you get a combination of outstanding performance and excellent construction, it almost always translates into great skis. And Volkl has been doing this for decades, providing experienced skiers with the skis they need to charge hard when the snow is falling.

Volkl Ski Review

Volkl has a wide range of skis available for this season, including options in the racing, freestyle, and all-mountain categories. I can’t review each of these here, but I will tell you a few that look the most promising.

The Volkl Mantra is a favorite ski that has been around for a while. But it continues to improve, and the 2022 version of the Matra is a great option for freeride skiing or general big-mountain situations.

The Volkl Deacon is a great all-mountain option that comes in many different sizes to accommodate whatever skill level or preferences you might have. This very capable model can handle a little bit of everything you throw at it.

Volkl Ski Length Recommendation

Like any other type of ski, you should always base your ski length on your height, ability level, and weight. Generally, more experienced skiers will want a longer ski, and less experienced people will want a shorter ski.

I am new to skiing. I rented my skis the first 3 times, and then bought my own. I positively love skiing, and my teacher tells me I’m a pretty aggressive skier for a beginner, and also my age. I went to my local ski shop, and asked about new skis. The main asked me about my type of skiing I like to do. I told him groomed slopes, and using the skis to get me to the bottom. That means carved turns, and good parallel skiing. He recommended the Volkl deacon 72 for me. At first I was wondering why he recommended this for me, but now I understand. For myself I didn’t want a ski that I would have for a season, get bored with it, and go buy some new skis. Plus I wanted something that I could move up to as I got better. The first time out on them I didn’t like them. Then I took my last lesson. The teacher showed me how to use my lower body and how to use my feet to initiate turns. This made this ski work for me. I still have some work to do, but next season I want to hit the black diamonds on my home hill.

      Hey Eric,

Thanks for sharing your story. Your instructor has you headed in the right direction. Poles aren’t really needed when you are just beginning and sticking to easy terrain. But when the slopes start to get steeper, and your turning becomes more important, they play a huge role. There’s really no advice I can offer with words that will prepare you for using poles while you ski, you just need to get out there and do it. You’ll get the hang of it soon enough, especially if you ski often and keep taking lessons. You don’t need to overthink it, and poles will become second nature in no time.
